Mom and Dad Chu Visit Taiwan 2006

Saturday, October 7, 2006 - Day 2

The plan was for mom and dad to go golfing with Mike in the early morning. However, this fell through due to the tired state Mike's mom and dad were in. It seemed that the previous day's walking was, as Mike's mom put it, "More walking than I have done in 30 years." That was said only after a walk from our car through a tunnel equivalent to the length of the block mom and dad live on back home in Lacombe.

Instead of golfing on a mountain nestled sub-tropical golf course where wild cockatoos comment on your faulty putting, which they seemed to have enough on back home on a lovely Canadian farmer's field course, the whole family set out for a leisurely drive to the country side not too far from the city. We explored San Di Men area (a small town in the mountains outside of Kaohsiung). Our drive took us past banana plantations, coconut and betel nut fields until we entered the steep climb up to the San Di Men townsite. Within San Di Men we visited the massive Taiwan Aboriginal Park. It was equivalent to the size of Blackfalds (a town from back home).

The entirety of the park cannot be explored on foot so there are small transports that take you to different points of the park that represent the various tribes of Taiwan. Dad was mesmorized by the aboriginal show. Mom enjoyed it too. Especially when the man representing one tribe came out in a nice white thong. Kathy and mom couldn't control their giggling.

We headed home shortly after the show finished. We stopped at a market to pick up some groceries since mom wanted to cook for us while she was on vacation. I guess they were already tired of us buying them dinner or maybe the Taiwanese cuisine displayed its true colors.
